8 Ways To Take Care Of Your Mental Health

Depression has become a serious health condition in the United States.  It is sad to see and hear about people on a killing rampage in the news, and America has been getting a lot of the spotlight.  While the media and the larger portion of the public see guns, others see the problem could be deeper.  It could be mental health, and according to the Center for Disease Prevention and Control, more than 1 in 20 Americans who are 12 years old and older reported depression.  That was just back in 2005 and 2006.

5 Mental Health Benefits of Regular Exercise

Mental illness is extremely common, and can manifest itself in many different ways. Unfortunately, not everyone gets the help they need to stay healthy—60% of American adults do not receive treatment for mental illness, even after diagnosis. With the stigma associated with mental illness, some are afraid to seek diagnosis and treatment. Treatment can also be expensive, or cause unwanted side effects that can be worse than the illness itself, and our ability to treat and eliminate mental illness is still limited. Though it cannot solve all the problems associated with mental illness or addiction, exercise can be a tool for people struggling with these issues, as it has numerous benefits and is completely free and accessible. It’s also a great tool for people who are often stressed, anxious, or have trouble relaxing. Here are just 5 of the many reasons exercise can have a positive impact on mental health:

October is widely known as Breast Cancer awareness month with cities hosting several walks and races. Sadly most of us can say that we know or have known someone who has journeyed this road.  Those whom are surviving can find themselves in a de-conditioned state in the blink of an eye.  Everyone that is dealing with the recovery of cancer will echo the same thing.  I want to feel better, get stronger and increase my endurance.

Unexpected Lessons…The Emotional Impacts of Injury

It has been a little less than a year since I broke two bones in my ankle. I have written previously about the importance of support following an injury and about the arduous process to discover why I went from being able to walk an average of 3 miles a day to barely being able to get from one side of a room to the other. After a series of visits to various Doctors and specialists, I finally received an accurate diagnosis and found out the pain I was experiencing was from stress fractures. A stress fracture is one or more tiny cracks in a bone.  I was applying excessive force on weak parts of my ankle.

World Heart Day: Preventing Cardiovascular Disease

Your heart is at the very core of your health, and it’s crucial to keep it strong and healthy throughout your life. Cardiovascular disease is a major problem worldwide, claiming millions of lives in every country, and negatively affecting millions of others. In the United States, the CDC reports that about 610,000 people die of heart disease each year (1 in 4 of total annual deaths). While these statistics are grim, there is some good news: many deaths from heart disease can be avoided by using preventative care. World Heart Day is September 29th this year, and its goal is to spread awareness about cardiovascular disease and maintaining heart health.
