Great book about living with an acquired disability: and it’s a film, now, too!

Aaron Ralston was a 20-something athlete who was a bit of a daredevil in his exercise habits. He rode a mountain bike alone along stony outcrops in the desert; he slid down between rocks into hidden subterranean pools, and he liked to climb and hike alone in unfrequented areas.

As everyone has heard, Aaron was ultimately trapped by a rockslide in a deep cleft in Robbers Roost canyon in Utah, and after 5 miserable days his desperation drove him to cut off part of his own arm in order to save his life.

The book by Aaron Ralston is called “Between a Rock and a Hard Place”. The film is known as “127 Hours”. They are quite different, although  both the book and the movie are very informative and interesting.

The book takes the reader through Aaron’s escapades as very savvy and athletic loner who makes a couple of very serious mistakes. First, he doesn’t tell anyone where he is going so that no one knows where to start looking for him when he fails to return. Second, he takes a lot of uncalculated risks.

The book is a rich documentation of Aarons’ coming of age as he learns the meaning of his life the hard way. The book documents the enormous internal strength this man can draw from, as well as his bravery .  Aaron is always looking on the bright side despite the harshness of any situation.

As Aaron turns his considerable talent and strength toward learning to live with a disability, he is an inspiration to all of us, and watching him explore his own inner motivations and responsibilities helps the reader seek and explore our own.

The book and movie are entertaining, exciting, frightening, and funny. The movie does not go into any of the recovery process  covered by the book.  The book is well worth the read and I hope you have time to look into it over the holiday season!  I bought it for my husband for about $10 at

Great Story!  Great acting performance in the movie by James Franco. The really great part about his story is that he still into rock climbing. Sorry if I spoiled it for anyone.
