October is widely known as Breast Cancer awareness month with cities hosting several walks and races. Sadly most of us can say that we know or have known someone who has journeyed this road.  Those whom are surviving can find themselves in a de-conditioned state in the blink of an eye.  Everyone that is dealing with the recovery of cancer will echo the same thing.  I want to feel better, get stronger and increase my endurance.

It has been a little less than a year since I broke two bones in my ankle. I have written previously about the importance of support following an injury and about the arduous process to discover why I went from being able to walk an average of 3 miles a day to barely being able to get from one side of a room to the other. After a series of visits to various Doctors and specialists, I finally received an accurate diagnosis and found out the pain I was experiencing was from stress fractures. A stress fracture is one or more tiny cracks in a bone.  I was applying excessive force on weak parts of my ankle.

Pressure ulcers or bedsores arise if you have an inadequate supply of blood flow to the skin in a particular region. They form when your skin and soft tissue presses against a harder surface such as chair or bed for a long time. This pressure reduces the blood flow to the area. Lack of blood supply damages the skin tissues resulting in pressure ulcers. The most typical reason for a pressure sore is the lack of movement. So, it is common in people who are moving in wheelchairs or lying in a bed. People who are overweight or underweight can also develop pressure ulcers. It also happens to people who are not able to control their bowels or bladder and people who spend a lot of time in one position.

As we have finished watching an outstanding Olympic games we can fill the next two weeks with anticipation for the Paralympic games which be held September 8-17. The best part of these games is that they will be on the same TV channel as the Olympics. Now, I do look forward to the break! After being glued to my TV at night and on weekends I can use a little break. But not too long! Remember the Paralympics have about 19 different sports plus they will also be in the same beautiful city of Rio. What should not be forgotten about these Paralympic games is that there would be no Paralympic Games if it is was not for the effort of the athletes, NBC, USOC, IOC, Rio Olympic Committee and Dr. Ludwig Guttmann. Who is Dr. Guttmann?
