What is that sound that I hear? Oh yes, it is the sound of a bat cracking while it hits a ball. It is the popping of a ball into a glove and oh yes, the smell of free cut green grass. You know that I am talking about baseball.

Today is the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, which has become very powerful tool in uniting our world. What is probably being stated is how our world really needs sport probably more than ever.
I am sure we all were excited to see the Grammy awards last week. Personally, I could care less. I am actually someone that does not watch that much T.V. I did for some reason want to watch the tributes to David Bowie, BB King and Glenn Frey. I am not that big a fan of any of them but I do appreciate their work and success. Plus, like many, I was shocked by their passing away. However, as I switched back and forth to catch them I did happen to see Mr. Stevie Wonder present an award and make the statement of the year!
Overweight and obese Americans regularly experience various forms of discrimination in many social settings and even at the workplace. For instance, on average, obese men and women earn $2 and $4 less per hour respectively at the workplace compared to non-obese workers. Sadly, a weight-based stigma can have a negative impact on a person’s health, self-esteem, and performance at work or school. This notwithstanding, 154.7 million Americans aged 20 years and older are overweight or obese. Fortunately, you can fight obesity and maintain a healthy BMI by doing the following:
As we are in the middle of winter, a behind the scenes event has happened that needs to have some attention. No, it is not Super Bowl 50, halftime shows or any other sporting event. However, it does have something to do with sports in Alabama. Now, I know some of you have heard about the football team, but something even more important has happened.
On November 16, I will be celebrating the United Nation’s International Day for Tolerance by doing what I usually fail to do; I will pack away my assumptions in my bag when I interact with people. This conscious effort is difficult for someone who looks different compared to the societal norm, someone with a physical disability or someone who can’t interact in a socially acceptable way because of their limitations is daily confronted with intolerance.
The 29-year-old man with cerebral palsy allegedly waited more than 30 minutes on a United Airlines plane parked at a Reagan International Airport gate while workers were supposed to bring an aisle wheelchair to his seat so he could get off the plane and go to the restroom. So, he decided to crawl down the aisle to disembark the plane and get his own wheelchair.
It is slowly getting to that time of year when we embark upon our holiday fun and festivities let’s not forget that as much as we want to get away from it all let’s not forget to do what we typically do when we are not on break. That is Exercise! More importantly, let’s try to over indulge on things that we typically do indulge on. That would be everything!
Anxiety is a much-misunderstood psychological condition. Some question its existence as a “real” health-disorder, leaving sufferers lost in a world that does not understand them. However, as any psychology professional knows, anxiety is as real and potentially incapacitating a disorder as depression, and – like depression – can only be healed with a well-planned mix of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), professional counseling, and medication. If properly-treated, anxiety sufferers can go on to live happy, fully-functional professional and personal lives.
For years I have always heard that unemployment for people with disabilities has been at or around 70%. This number has always been the same in my 10 plus years of public speaking, 20 years in the workforce of serving people with disabilities and the 30 plus years that I have been a person with a disability. At times it seems as if this would never change. How can it? How would we know for sure? Something has got to change. What can be done to make a dent in this number?
