We all know about the World Mental Health Day which is celebrated every year in a month of October. Mental Health Week is being held from 5 to 12 October in 2014. This year’s theme is “Living with Schizophrenia”. Now in this article we will talk about Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder and people experienced with it can’t identify between what is real and unreal. It’s said to be a major mental issue but it doesn’t mean that people can’t carry on an active life. There’s a still hope. It can be treated if it is identified at an early stage.

Schizophrenia is mental condition on how someone behaves, thinks, and views the world. People with Schizophrenia create an imaginary world in which they talk with the other people that don’t have any existence. Sometimes their talking style can be changed to talk in a confusing way. As per the doctors, a person believes that someone is trying to hurt them. For the above reasons, people with Schizophrenia sever relationships from the outer world and live alone with fear.

The signs of Schizophrenia can be seen in the late teens or early adulthood. There have been cases where it can have an effect on young children and adolescents. It can be more severe in men compared to women. With better support and early treatment without delay, people with Schizophrenia can live life independently.

The most common early signs of Schizophrenia are withdrawing from friends and family, delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, changes in activities, fail to perform well, depression, lack of motivation, thoughts of suicide and lots more. The above signs are not confined with the Schizophrenia only but it may result from other diseases as well. So how do we confirm that a person is experiencing Schizophrenia? Try to look at the other side and you can see his/her behavior is unusual.

The cause of Schizophrenia is unknown but genetic or environmental factors play a vital role. Sometimes it may seem that person doesn’t have any kind of issue while their family members quietly deal with Schizophrenia. The environment factors involved was either during pregnancy or at a later stage of infancy. Some of the factors are parents have a viral infection, premature birth, viral exposure during childhood, parental divorce, sexual abuse in the early days, use drugs, nicotine or alcohol excessively, and lots more. In 40 to 50% of cases, it may occur because of the abnormal brain structure due to neurocognitive deficits and differences in the functionalities of the frontal lobes, hippocampus and temporal lobes.

A treatment of Schizophrenia is done based on the reports of family history, medical history, physical exam, and laboratory tests. Once you’ve identified the symptoms, you need to get involved in treatment as early as possible. With proper medication, therapy, strong support, and self reliability, many people can control symptoms and live cheerful life with their friends and family together. If you find anybody nearby you with Schizophrenia, kindly help them by giving your best support to get treatment.
