In an ideal world, everyone would be in total control of their emotions. Well, guess what? It’s not an ideal world and people do tend to let their emotions run high at times. This isn’t always a bad thing. As long as you find a healthy outlet for giving way to pent up feelings and emotions, you should be good.

Your overall wellbeing is not limited to your physical health. Your mental condition has a lot to do with it too. And just like it takes effort and discipline to build/maintain physical health, it is the same with mental health.

What is Mental Health?

Mental health encompasses all the psychological aspects of your wellbeing, including your ability to manage your feelings and deal with difficulties, the quality of your relationships, and the way you feel about yourself.

Just because a person does not have psychological issues does not mean that he is mentally healthy. It is not the absence of mental problems, but the presence of positivity that determines a person’s mental condition. A lack of negative feelings, however, does not imply positivity. While you may not have negative feelings, you need to indulge in acts of positivity to maintain good mental health.

People who are mentally healthy, typically, have the following characteristics –

  • A high level of self confidence
  • A high level of self esteem
  • A sense of fulfillment and happiness
  • The ability to deal with challenges and setbacks
  • The ability to adapt to new environments
  • A sense of meaningfulness and purpose in what they do and in their relationships
  • The ability to balance emotions

Live an Active Life

Being active benefits you not just physically, but also mentally. This applies to all ages, so it makes sense to start young and lead an active lifestyle all your life. Exercising keeps you fit so you can continue to enjoy doing things you love at any age.

Apart from making you feel good, it has other long-term advantages too. Most mental health specialists advise their patients to indulge in some sort of physical activity every day to maintain their health.

Be with Positive People

Surrounding yourself with friends and family is a great way to bond with them and feel loved for who you are in return. Having meaningful relationships influences a person’s mental wellbeing a great deal. If you haven’t spoken to your family or to an old friend in a long time, it’s time to pick up the phone and have a chat with them.

Inculcate Healthy Habits

Eating a balanced diet has a direct effect on how you feel physically and mentally. Lap up on all the essential nutrients and ensure you maintain a healthy weight. Sleep Well

Just like your body needs rest to recuperate, so does your mind. Make sure your get proper rest so it works optimally. Disturbed or interrupted sleep can have negative implications on your mental health.

Help Others

Helping those in need is a great way to feel better about yourself. Do something thoughtful for your family, friends, neighbors, or volunteer for a cause that you care about. Visit an old age home, or an orphanage, or work in a community garden. The idea is to contribute in some way to make a positive difference in other people’s lives and feel good about it.

Quiet Your Mind

Shut out negative people, words, feelings, and thoughts and channelize all your energy towards spirituality. You could try praying, meditating, chanting, or relaxing exercises. Doing so will calm your mind and improve your outlook on life.

Introspect Often

Take a look inside your mind and think of times that bring you joy, comfort, and self-assurance. Think about the present moment, your place in it, and where you’d like to be. You can do so by writing or talking about it. Some people tend to introspect by taking long walks. Be honest with yourself.

Be Proud of Who You Are

Nobody’s perfect and if you can accept other people with their flaws, you need to do that for yourself too. It takes both the good and the bad to make a person whole. Everyone, including you, deserves to be treated with respect, irrespective of age, gender, religion, race, or sexuality.

Seek Help

You might not always be able to cope with difficult situations, and that’s perfectly okay. But do make sure you get all the help you need by seeing a good doctor. Mental health issues are common and can affect anyone, even those who seem strong.

Have Fun

Laugh, go out, do what you enjoy, don’t take life too seriously, and see the humor in little things. The more you laugh and smile, the better you will feel.
