A few aches and pains now and then are hardly unusual even for the healthiest of us, but more often than you’d think, these stiff muscles and sore backs can become more than just a minor annoyance. Up to 80% of people will experience chronic low back pain at some point in their life, and when there’s not a specific cause linked to it, this pain can be difficult to treat. Though surgeries and injections are often used as treatment, sometimes the best ways to relieve pain are the more natural, non-invasive ones.
1. Keep moving: Back pain doesn’t exist in a vacuum—our bodies, after all, are complex networks of interconnecting muscles. Often, if your back hurts, it’s because something else in your body is out of alignment. By strengthening the rest of your muscles, you can eliminate some of this pain. Exercises focused on walking, muscle strength, and endurance can be effective in reducing back pain, as well as stretching exercises such as yoga.
2. Sleep well: Sleep is a vital component in maintaining both physical and mental health, but sleeping poorly can sometimes aggravate lower back pain. Avoid this extra discomfort by focusing on your sleeping posture. Sleeping on your back or your side are the best positions to choose, as they let your spine maintain its natural curves. A strategically placed pillow or bed wedge can also perform this function, and allow you to wake up feeling more relaxed and pain-free.
3. Sit and Stand up straight: Bad posture, such as slouching or hunching over can also lead to more back pain. Correcting this means more than just remembering to sit and stand up straight. Exercises like walking, running, core strengthening, and yoga can help strengthen the muscles associated with good posture, so after a while they’ll be doing most of the work for you. Posture is one of those things we don’t often think about, so practicing these exercises regularly is vital if you want to develop the muscle memory to stand up straight.
Chronic back pain can be devastating if you let it go unchecked, but with these simple exercises you can significantly reduce this pain, or even prevent it if you aren’t currently experiencing symptoms.
